ABOUT
A landmark study exploring how the rhythm of Ramadan impacts sleep, diet, and your body.
Why Are We Studying Sleep and Meal Timing During Ramadan?
The impact of Ramadan fasting on sleep alone has been well-researched. We hope to better understand the impact of Ramadan on sleep and cardio metabolic health. With this research, we can provide interventions on ways to practice Ramadan that maintains sleep and cardiovascular wellness.
How Is Sleep Affected During Ramadan?
During Ramadan, changes in eating schedules often induce profound physiological shifts and significantly alter sleep routines. Outside the context of Ramadan chronic sleep insufficiency and poor sleep quality have been strongly associated with increased cardiometabolic risk – including hypertension, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Moreover, the modern day practice of Ramadan can include nutrient dense meals, widespread exposure to bright light, and disrupted/fragmented sleep for an extended period of time, dramatically increasing the risk for short- and long-term adverse cardiometabolic outcomes.
